Facts, Rumors, and Myths about the Disneyland Resort

Walt Disney used to take his two daughters to Griffith Park in Los Angeles every week. They called it Daddy’s Day. Walt didn’t enjoy always having to sit on the bench while his kids had fun. He wished there was a place where adults and kids could have fun together. So, he decided to build his own park. This was the birth of the concept of Disneyland.

Many people and experts told Walt that he needed to have multiple entrances to the park for convenience, but Walt wanted to control guests’ experience when they enter the park, so he chose to build only one entrance.

Construction for Disneyland lasted only one year, to the day. Groundbreaking took place on July 16, 1954, and the park opened on July 17, 1955.

During Opening Day, The fresh tar on the walkways wasn’t dry yet, so women’s high heels sunk into it. They were given free moccasins from Frontierland because those were the only shoes available in the park.

Many opening day tickets were counterfeited. Even though only 6,000 people were invited, there were about 28,000 people in attendance.

Tinker Bell was the original mascot for Disneyland because Walt didn't want Mickey Mouse to be associated with the park if Disneyland failed.

For the first few years after opening, Disneyland was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the off season.

Until the 1960s, men with long hair were denied entrance to the park.

Disneyland in California is the only Disney park in the world that Walt personally got to see completed before his passing.

Sleeping Beauty Castle stands 77 feet tall. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the tallest structure in the park. It is surpassed in height by the Matterhorn, Space Mountain, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

The drawbridge for the castle is real. It has been raised and lowered twice, once for opening day and again during the grand re-opening of Fantasyland after its remodel in 1983.

The line up of buildings on Main Street is an illusion to make it seem like it is a longer walk leaving the park than it is coming into the park. This is to discourage guests from leaving the park early.

Store-front windows on Main Street are placed closer to the ground so children can see inside.

Walt Disney built an apartment above the fire department on Main Street for himself and his family when they wanted to stay in the park.

The ballroom dancing ghosts were accidentally put in the ride where the reflection makes it seem like the ladies are leading, instead of the men.

Pirates loads approximately 3,400 guests per hour, the quickest reload rate in the entire park—meaning Pirates has the fastest moving line in Disneyland.
